about

Been thinking a lot lately about my first love and how I wish things had been different back then. To us, it was beautiful and pure but certain people thought of it the opposite way and when you’re young and vulnerable, your support network is everything. Afterwards, I felt like I had to hide who I was, she was always a lot braver than me. Thanks to the courageousness of others, there has been a shift in attitude lately, but there are still people struggling for acceptance from their family, their society, from themselves. I wrote this in the hope that a 17 year old me or her would hear it. This song is for them. Don’t be any other way.

lyrics

I knew when I first held your hand
The people who made you wouldn’t understand,
They tried to lock you in a cage
And they met our love with fear and rage,

But I wasn’t ashamed
So I kissed her anyway.

If I have only one regret,
It’s that I wish I had not met you yet,
Your mother’s living in the Stone Age
But there’s nothing about you I would change,

But I wasn’t ashamed
So I kissed you anyway,
And you’re not to blame,
You can’t be any other way.

I’ll be holding on to you til dawn,
You’ll be holding onto me til they come,
I know I have to let you go,
You can’t be 17 without a home,
They said it’s not what God wants
But what god would keep us apart?
They say it’s not what god wants
What do they know?

Wait a couple years and you’ll be free,
You can find a nice girl much nicer than me,
Buy a dog and a car, drive away from this town,
I hope you get married, you can do that now.

Don’t be ashamed,
Go ahead and kiss her anyway,
‘Cause we bleed the same.

I’ll be holding on to you ‘til dawn,
You’ll be holding on to me til they come,
I know I have to let you go,
You can’t be 17 without a home,
They said it’s not what God wants
But what god would keep us apart?
What god would keep us apart?
What got would keep us apart?
They say it’s not what God wants,
What do they know?
What do they know?
